The
Hessische Staatstheater (State Theater) or Opera House is located opposite
the Kurhaus Kolonnade. It was built between 1892 and 1894. It was
bombed during the war. The ceiling and one end of the building had to be
replaced. The city renewed this theater again in 1976 for a cost
of approximately DM167,000,000.00.
It has a pillared
hall which leads to smaller rooms, used for meetings, and shops.
The inside is beautiful and magnificent with the Baroque style architecture.
There is an adjoining room adorned with marble, gold leaf, and elegantly
tiled floors which serves refreshments before and after the concerts.
The big theater (Grosses Haus) has 1041 seats, and the small theater (Kleines
Haus) has 328 seats, and the studio has 90 seats.
This is where
people go for dramas, theater, opera, ballets, and modern plays. The May
Festival is a very special cultural event that is held every year in Wiesbaden. |
