The Philosophy
When students come to this class, they  work hard because this "work" is very important.   We come to this class to learn basic skills besides "learning how to learn".  These skills are life long skills.  They will affect students' lives and will determine future success.

The Compensatory Education Program is designed to be a supplementary program to the regular classroom instruction.  Its purpose is to help meet the needs of students who have performed below expected achievement levels on the Terra Nova Test in Language Arts, Reading or Math and for some students who may be having some difficulties with those skills in the regular classroom.

The Compensatory Education teacher sometimes works in the classroom along with the classroom teacher with some of the students.  She works with others  individually or in small groups according to their needs in her room.  We will be using the DODDS adopted programs in conjunction with the regular classroom and supplemental materials useful for the particular skill or skills we are working on at the time.
Students are selected and placed in the Compensatory Education Program in several ways:

  • Terra Nova Test scores indicate a need
  • Through classroom teacher recommendation
  • When informal testing in the regular classroom indicates a need.
  • The Comp. Ed. teacher works with these identified students for at least part of the school year. It is important that the teacher and parents are in contact with each each other.   By working together,  they  can insure the best education for each child.
