Seniors: Fifth Grade
|
Respect
and Responsibility = Results
When the students learn
respect for teachers, their classmates, themselves and, moreover, also
accept responsibility for their actions, then good results ensue. |

Language
Arts/Reading
Grade
five students choose reading as a means of solving problems and expanding
knowledge, write to summarize, give precise instructions and directions,
understand the characteristics of various genres of literature, adapt language
to meet different social and situational needs, and use available technology
to research and produce and end product that is accurately documented. |
Math (to
top)
Students
in fifth grade use the base-ten number system to name infinitely large
and infinitely small quantities, graphically represent relationships between
numbers on a number line including the placement of fractional numbers.
Computation strategies include generating multiple solutions for time,
money, fractions, and measurement problems. Students explore triangles
by classifying them by side length and angle measure, and use the volume
of a rectangular solid and two of its dimensions to determine its third
dimension. The expectancies also call for using sampling to predict
outcomes, using patterns to predict other elements in a series, organizing
and reporting sets of data in a variety of ways. A strong emphasis
on mathematical concepts and understanding also supports the development
of problem solving. While learning mathematics, students will be
actively engaged and use concrete materials and appropriate technologies
such as calculators and computers. Students should be encouraged
to explain summarize, analyze, design and evaluate mathematical ideas in
writing and discussion for the following set of standards. |
Science (to
top)
The
fifth grade standards emphasize the importance of selecting appropriate
instruments for measuring and recording observations. The organization,
analysis, and application of data continue to be an important focus of
classroom inquiry. Science skills from preceding grades, including
questioning, using and validating evidence, and systematic experimentation
are reinforced at this level. Students are introduced to more detailed
concepts of sound and light and the relationship to energy and the properties
of matter. The cellular makeup of organisms and the distinguishing characteristics
of groups of organisms are stressed. Students will learn about he
characteristics of the oceans and the earth's changing surface and exploring
space. |
Social Studies (to
top)
The
standards for grade five emphasize the history of the United States from
pre-Columbian times until 1877. The ten themes of social studies
still provide the basis of instruction. Students use a variety of
sources of historical information to explore the historical development
of the United States. Students study important U.S. document to include
treaties, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, Civil Rights legislation
and federal regulations. The roles of the various branches of government
are defined and students have the opportunity to examine how science and
technology influence governments. Students participate in simulations,
debates and projects as part of the learning experience. Comparisons between
the U.S. and host nation countries provide students the experience of identifying
commonalties and differences among cultures . Emphasis is placed
on identifying the contributions that all people have made to American
history.
